Debt Review Guide

Car Finance Under Debt Review in South Africa

Straight answers on what the National Credit Act allows, when you can apply again, and how to be approval-ready the day your clearance certificate lands.

The honest answer: while you are actively under debt review you cannot legally take on new vehicle finance. Any company promising otherwise is not being straight with you. What we can do is get you ready, so that the moment your clearance certificate is issued you apply from the strongest possible position.

Your Path to Finance After Debt Review

  1. 1Complete your debt review payment plan with your counsellor.
  2. 2Receive your Form 19 clearance certificate.
  3. 3Confirm the bureaus have removed the debt review flag (7–21 days).
  4. 4Save a 10–20% deposit and keep 3 clean months of bank statements.
  5. 5Apply through Drive Fund Connect — we place you with the right lender.

What to Do While You Wait

  • Never miss a debt review instalment — it is the record lenders read first.
  • Avoid returned debit orders; lenders check 3 months of statements.
  • Build a deposit — it lowers your instalment and lifts approval odds.
  • Do not open store accounts or short-term loans to 'rebuild' credit.

Debt Review & Vehicle Finance: Common Questions

Can I get car finance while under debt review in South Africa?

While you are actively under debt review, the National Credit Act prevents you from taking on new credit — including vehicle finance. Once you receive your clearance certificate and the debt review flag is removed from your credit profile, you can apply again. Drive Fund Connect helps you prepare so that your first application after clearance is a strong one.

How long after debt review can I finance a car?

You can apply as soon as your clearance certificate has been issued and the bureaus have removed the debt review listing — usually within 7 to 21 days of clearance. Waiting a further 3 to 6 months while keeping your bank account clean noticeably improves the rate you will be offered.

Can I get a car if I withdraw from debt review?

Withdrawing early is complex and depends on whether a court order was granted. Speak to your debt counsellor first. Ending debt review incorrectly can leave the flag on your record and reset your creditworthiness, which makes vehicle finance harder, not easier.

What can I do in the meantime?

Keep every debt review payment on time, avoid unpaid debit orders, and save toward a deposit. A 10 to 20 percent deposit at clearance is the single biggest lever on your approval and your instalment.

Will Drive Fund Connect help me after clearance?

Yes. Send us your details now and a consultant will map out what you will qualify for at clearance, what deposit to aim for, and which lenders suit your profile — then place the application when you are eligible.
